Welcome to the ASV Deep Sky Section

In a Galaxy Far, Far Away…

Are you fascinated by galaxies, open and globular clusters, planetary nebulae, emission nebulae, reflection nebulae, and dark nebulae, to name just a few? If so, join the Deep Sky Section at our monthly meetings at the Leon Mow Dark Sky Site (LMDSS).

Bring your telescope if you have one! If not, don’t worry—there will be telescopes available for viewing, including the Society’s impressive 40-inch telescope and the 25-inch Obsession. Our goal is to provide novice deep-sky observers with the opportunity to learn from experienced astronomers about locating and observing celestial objects, choosing the best eyepieces and filters, and using resources to maximize their observing experience.

For seasoned observers, the Deep Sky Section offers a chance to connect with like-minded enthusiasts, share information, and pass on knowledge to newcomers. Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to enjoy what we love most—pushing our telescopes to their limits and exploring the universe's wonders.

What to Bring:

  • Telescope and equipment (optional if you don’t own one)
  • Camping gear, including a chair and sleeping equipment (if staying overnight)
  • A red torch (no white light, please)
  • Warm clothing, as it can get extremely cold at night
  • A plate to share for supper (served between 10–11 pm)

We recommend arriving during daylight hours, especially if this is your first visit, to allow plenty of time to set up your telescope and camp comfortably.
