ALL ABILITIES OBSERVATORY

The All Abilities Observatory (AAO) is a unique and inclusive facility proudly operated by the ASV at the Leon Mow Dark Sky Site. Designed with accessibility in mind, the AAO ensures that all members and guests — including those with mobility challenges — can enjoy the wonders of the night sky.

A fully sealed tarmac path leads directly from a designated disabled parking space to the observatory, allowing wheelchair access right to the entrance. The observatory features a roll-off roof for clear overhead viewing and houses the specially-designed All Abilities Telescope.

This telescope features a Nasmyth optical configuration, meaning the eyepiece remains fixed at a comfortable, seated height — regardless of where the telescope is pointing in the sky. This makes it especially user-friendly for those unable to move around a standard equatorial or alt-azimuth setup.

The telescope is mounted on a variable-height pier to suit users of different needs and heights. Both the pier and telescope were custom-built by Astroworx and generously donated by the Western Benevolent Association, helping make astronomy more inclusive and accessible for all.
